Götz Teutsch was born in Hermannstadt in Transylvania.
He studied with Dimitrie Dinicu and Radu Aldulescu at the “Ciprian Porumbescu” Conservatory in Bucharest, and later also with Enrico Mainardi.
In 1970, he was admitted to the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and, from 1976 onward, served as its principal cellist. He performed under chief conductors Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, and Sir Simon Rattle, and was one of the founding members of the “12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic.”
As a chamber musician and soloist, he performed worldwide and devoted himself extensively to the performance practice of early music, also studying the viola da gamba.
In 2006, he retired from the orchestra; since then, he has been involved, among other things, in preparing young cellists for auditions, examinations, and competitions.
